Three Reasons Why Your Garage Door Is Jammed

Your garage door is a seemingly simple affair that reliably does its job day after day... until it jams up. At this point, you realize there's more to this mechanism than you first thought. It has a motor, springs, pulleys, rollers, tracks, cables, sensors, a locking device, and a remote control. Each of these components can malfunction in a variety of ways. Knowing where to look for the likely causes of a jammed garage door is the first step to getting it back in working order.

Damaged Door Track
Perhaps the trailer that you backed into the garage damaged the track or maybe it was damaged by something attached on top of your SUV. In any case, a sufficiently large bend or deformation of the track can cause the rollers to hang up.

Track Has An Obstruction
Check the track for obstructions such as a tool, piece of wood, debris left there by an animal, etc. The solution could be as simple as removing the blockage.

Broken Garage Door Spring
If your garage opening system uses a torsion spring, look for a gap along the spring where it broke. If the system uses extension springs, look for a spring that's hanging at the side of the door. Replacing a broken spring is very dangerous, so this is one repair you should never complete yourself. Get the help of a reputable garage door service contractor.
