Piping
In looking for leaks, focus on fitting, such as places where the piping changes direction. Places where different types of piping are joined can be another trouble spot. Floors and other surfaces near piping can provide clues through staining or mineral deposits.
Fixtures and valves
Leaks in routinely used fixtures should be noticed during use. However, inspection time might be a good opportunity to acknowledge and repair a drip you've gotten used to.
Houses commonly have valves that are routinely open, such as a valve that shuts off water to part of the house. Since they are not routinely turned, they may become stuck. Exercising them (close-open-close-open) keeps them free and easy to turn if needed in an emergency or to perform a repair. If a valve has not been exercised in a long time, proceed slowly and watch for leaks around stems.
