How to Silence a Noisy Garage Door

If your garage door is making terrible noises when opened or closed, you may want to consider doing some routine maintenance. There are many potential reasons for this, like loose parts or dirty hardware, but one common cause is a lack of lubrication.
Lubrication

Apply lubrication to all steel hinges at their pivot points. Next, lubricate the rollers. Use the straw tube of your lubricant spray can to direct lubricant into the ball-bearings of metal rollers. Plastic rollers don't have ball-bearings and applying lubricant to them won't have much effect. Pulleys with exposed ball-bearings should also be lubricated. Another area to lubricate is the trolley rail. Most of the friction occurs at the top of the rail and this is where most of the lubricant should be applied. Torsion springs also require lubrication. Spray enough but don't overdo it to the point where lots of lubricant is dripping out.

Use a silicone spray for your lubricant. WD-40 is a multi-use agent that dissolves rust and is not meant to be a lubricant. Therefore, don't use it.

If this maintenance procedure fails to make your garage door run quietly, it may have mechanical issues that are best handled by your garage door contractor. For additional details, contact your local Austin TX garage door service provider.
